BLOCKLEY DECORATIVE AND FINE ARTS SOCIETY Founded 1985 |
| Church Recorders are NADFAS volunteers who make records of the contents of our national churches, thereby
promoting the recognition and preservation of the rich artistic heritage to be found in places of worship of all
religions. They record memorials, metalwork, stonework, woodwork, textiles, paintings, library, windows and miscellaneous items. The items are described in detail and their history researched. All the material is then compiled into a book illustrated with photographs and drawings. This record is presented to the church and copies are sent to national institutions to form part of a heritage archive. The next record to be completed by the Blockley group will be presented to St. Mary’s Church, Batsford at their carol service on 18th December 2011. All the completed records are held by the Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Monuments Record and copies are also sent to the Diocese and the library of the Cathedral and Church Buildings Division of Church House. Once we have finished the Batsford record we shall be working hard to complete the record for St. James Church, Longborough. The earliest record of St.James Church is in 1192 when a priest was murdered in the building which, at that time, consisted of a simple nave and chancel. For 300 years this church was administered by the monks from Hailes Abbey until the dissolution of the Abbey in 1593. Over the centuries the buildings have undergone many alterations and additions so the church we are recording today has developed over hundreds of years. If you are interested in history, architecture or anything to do with churches, or if you want to ensure that our heritage is recorded for future generations of scholars and the community at large, do think about becoming a church recorder. The Blockley group is re-forming after the retirement of its leader and several long serving members, we would like to hear from anyone who is interested in becoming a church recorder so that when our current work is completed we can arrange some training. At present we have joint leadership of the group so please contact: either: Jane Morton, 14 Condurrow Court, Stow-on-the-Wold GL54 1LX. Tel: 01451 832448, email: or: Brenda Samuels ‘Wessington’, Station Road, Blockley GL56 9DZ. Tel: 01386 701844, email: |
